How many times have you asked yourself "Is this really happening? Did I just experience that? Wait, am I trippin'?"
This piece is inspired by my self imposed conditioning to always try and check my blind spots. I've said time and time again, that it's unfortunate we associate the term "ignorance" with something bad. I say that because we're all born innately ignorant, along the way society helps condition us in ways to survive. However, I can say with certainty this American society has failed us in learning that we can still protect each other without compromising our right to exist--this applies to both the COVID pandemic and racial justice.
"The phrase "objects in (the) mirror are closer than they appear" is a safety warning that is required to be engraved on passenger side mirrors of motor vehicles in many places including United States, Canada, Nepal, India, and Saudi Arabia."
I took the urban motorist phrase "OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR" located on most passenger door mirrors and repurposed it to speak on those times when BIPOC have faced racial profiling, have come upon barriers that sprout from racism, and to speak to the civic uprisings which occurred not just in the USA but globally during 2020.
This is a visual reminder and response to those questions "Yes, that really happened. Yes, you just experienced racism and it definitely exists. No, you are not trippin'."
