Spilled
Mixed Media
10" x 12" x 21"
Wood, concrete, wire, soil, grass, plastic and burlap (Mixed media), 2020.
Spilled was created on the first week of 2020 and the grass fully grew by the time the 2nd week ended. The work was a performative piece that I helped grow over a period of time by watering the piece and maintaining the light given to it. Spilled was a work that was part of a collection of ground pieces that mimicked sliced up ground to question what is natural versus artificial in a ecological setting that is made by people but claimed to be part of nature. As of the end of 2020 the grass has passed away but the vessel remains the same with the roots and brittle grass on top that signifies that this work once lived but now it is classified as dead.
Born and currently based in Los Angeles, Derek Prado creates work that critiques the ecological structures and co-existence of industry, nature and the human condition that is impacted by cultural-social influences through installations, sculptures, performance, and socially engaged projects. Prado investigates the natural & unnatural elements within environments as he intertwines both within his own experiences and histories as a Bisexual, Mexican-Salvadoran mixed White-passing American. Prado graduated from OTIS College of Art and Design with his Master of Fine Arts + Emphasis in Social Practice degree, and has received his Bachelors of Arts at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
